I need some designing tips on a new kitchen.?
We are currently renovating our home with the major renovation being the kitchen. We chose maple cabinets with a coffee glaze and would like wood floors. I have not picked out countertops, I am very confused. Is there any rule as to what color counter tops and floors should be? Should I go light on the floors and counters, a dark color, a mixture? All the kitchens I see in the magazines look so well blended. I don't want to spend all this money and do a designer mess up. Any input will help ease my confusion.

- It really is your personal tastes. A lighter floor will make the kitchen look brighter. Dark colors make a kitchen look very elegant and modern, but can make it look dark. If you go dark, I would recommend going with lots of lighting, such as under cabinet LEDs. Counter-tops can be difficult as there 1.2 BILLION different styles and finishes. My parent's new house in Ky has a black / gray marble look with cherry cabinets and a earthen colors (dark) slate floor. Lowe's and Home Depot have kitchen design help that, if I remember right, can help you pick finishes and colors.
- You want something that will flow with the cabinets and appliances. Being it's a coffee glaze...you may want to stick towards the beige's and greens. I think i would go with some nice black marble or granite..depending on the budget. Black looks so nice with the metallic sparkles in the counters. Looks very sharp with stainless appliances and hardwood floor.
- Well, since your going for a wood look then your countertops should be made of wood also with a glaze like your cabinets or put steel or iron tops like I gave you on picture 4. they just need to some-what match. For lighting you should do hanging lights over the counter or one big hang light to give it a modern-day look. Also if your going to paint I would use a dark dark red or a tan brown because to me wall paper gives it a old grandma look but it depend on the wallpaper. So if your using wallpaper keep it a solid color because it would look better for the floors. Here are some pictures of wood -like kitchens! http://www.wood-furniture.callesella.it/immagini/cherry_wood_kitchen.jpg http://www.balirattan.net/gambar/Kitchen%20set%20(wood).jpg http://d368269.u30.websitesource.net/images/plan_b_kitchen_wood.jpg http://www.samuelwrightkitchens.co.uk/res/user/148_wood-shaker-beech.jpg http://www.castlesbros.com/images/wood_mode_kitchen.jpg http://www.castlesbros.com/images/wood_mode_kitchen_2.jpg
- well since you have wood cabinets and are planning on wood floors you should try not to let your counter tops be a neutral color or a color that would match or blend into your maple cabinetry especially if your top and bottom counters are the same color so to begin choosing the color for your counter tops I would suggest for you to pick out the decor and accessories that you are using in your kitchen such as the dishes or rugs then choose a color that stands out the most in them and put that color as your counter tops. dont be afraid if your decor has colors like red or blue because colors like that on you counter tops will really add a good spice to your kitchen. good luck
