Pregnant? Could she be?
last had sex april 20th. had spotty then extremely spotty light four day period two days early in may 7th. In june period didn't come. week later on 15th june took a test ept 25 miu came back neg. Took same test again on the 17th same neg response. Took clear blue easy 25 miu test twice one on the 20th, another on the 21st both neg. She has had a baby previously and showed all the signs of pregnancy by this time last pregnancy. Yet this time she has not one sign of pregnancy. Im concerned because both she and I are not ready for a child and wish to not be pregnant right now. She switched birth control brands (same design different brand) in mid april. She forgot to take a weeks worth of pills two weeks ago but we are not worried about that due to us last having sex april 20th. She has been under a ton of stress due to finals and her mother. The last time she missed a period was when she was last pregnant. She is telling me she's not pregnant that she would know women instinct. Any idea She is pretty sure it was a period. Just very very light. If it was indeed a period that would rule out pregnancy. Correct? Also if it was a missed period in may that would be over six weeks. A pregnancy test would show by that alloted time correct? Also could the weeks worth of missed pills mess up the intire cycle?

- dude you're gonna be a daddy!!!!! GRATS.
- That many negative pregnancy tests suggest maybe not- however, I've known people test negative months into it. I'm working on a case right now where she didn't know she was pregnant until nearly 16 weeks because all tests were negative. Missing a week of pills can be major. Typically there is a week "off" to initiate the menstrual cycle. The purpose of the pill is to mimic the hormonal changes during the cycle without allowing an ovum to mature and be released. A week's worth missed at the wrong time could certainly allow this to occur- which could lead to a pregnancy. A more definitive test can be offered by a doctor's office. These take blood and can detect a very small amount of the HCG hormone (which is what is detected by the home tests- but there must be much higher amounts to detect it in the urine). Also, she would be pushing 4-5 weeks (gestational age) and if she were pregnant a gestational sac may show up on ultrasound. The doc can also palpate an enlarged uterus and visualize cervical changes that occur. If you can swing it- have her seen just in case. Best to know now rather than later especially if you don't intend to keep it. Birth control pills are only 99.7% effective with correct use. Unfortunately, few if any actually use them text book perfectly. The failure rate on "typical" use approaches much larger percentages- like 3-5% vs .3%. Back up methods aren't a bad idea... Best of luck to the both of you. P.S. Some women spot for the first few months, some continue to have regular periods (albeit much lighter) throughout the entire pregnancy. Having a period, especially a light one, is NOT a sure sign she's not pregnant. But she could have been light if the timing was thrown off by her missed week and changing brands, too, since her uterus hasn't had time to build up a thick lining. Did this light period occur at the normal time? Correction- she'd be closer to 8 weeks not 4-5 weeks. I keep thinking April was LAST month. sorry. :) Tests should be picking it up by now but a blood test is more conclusive.
