paper supplier for graphic design student?

Hi all, about to progress into the 2nd year of a BA Hons in Graphic Design and I'm hoping to increase the level of finish in my work. There has been a strong emphasis on concepts so far, but not so much in producing finished articles. I want to be able to produce professional-looking booklets/books/brochures that are like those of high-end companies. I've got the printing and binding side of things down but... The thing is, in the industry, designs are usually sent to printhouses/reprographic companies who have access to various paper suppliers, such as Antalis for example. However, I'd like to get an understanding for the different thicknesses, types etc of industry-standard papers (like pantone coloured or light-double-sided gloss used in magazines) right now....but there doesnt seem to be anywhere that can cater for the individual? What do the small companies/freelancers do if they want to have control over the paper used in a brochure or create a mock-up? *confused*

  1. Use Andrex Bro.
  2. As an individual doing design work of the kind your suggesting you need not worry about the 95gsm or 125gsm weights of paper gloss or matt finish, white, chalk or ivory. The choice is endless. I work in a printing company on the outskirts of London in the repro department. I once went and got a BTEC in Graphic Design and ran into similar problems, though things have changed a bit since my college days, if you can come up with the design ie a 4page booklet, front, back and inside spread, and set it up via DTP on a PC or a Mac in Quark or one of the other applications and can produce a PDF of the finished product check out some of the sites on the internet that will except PDF's as artwork and then you can get them to print small runs of your artwork on any paper finish you like. Need to do some research online mate. Good Luck
  3. Assuming you are in London, try London Graphic Centre in Covent Garden. London Print Studio up on the HArrow Road may also be able to help you.
