Baby gift ideas?

Please don't give me websites, I'll be buying the gift locally. Just ideas of what I could get a newborn with a 30 dollar limit. It could be a few differnt items or one big item. The mom is a close friend of mine. I'd like something unique, maybe personalized. I'm also willing to make somehing if there was a nice idea of something I could make. Its a baby girl, and she'll be comming along any day now. Also I have to mail the present from Newfoundland to Montreal, so nothing too bulky please.

  1. diapers, you can never have too many diapers!! Maybe get them in a bigger size, so the mom can use them when the baby is older.
  2. I would suggest some of your favourite books from when you were a kid. If you really wanted to get more bang for your buck you could even buy gently used books from a used book store or your local salvation army/value village/good will. I know you said no websites, but I know that indigo/chapters sometimes offers free shipping on their web orders, and you can order as a gift and have it shipped directly to the Mom. That might be a good idea to save you a bit of money. Their website is www.indigo.ca. If you do buy books, expresspost would probably be the most economical way to ship it.
  3. Personally, I'm a practical person. When I had one of my daughters, my coworkers gave me bunches of diapers in different sizes. They tricked me into telling them what brand I prefer. They seemed to last forever and really helped our budget. You could give diapers in different sizes and make a personalized diaper bag for the baby. I pray your friend has a painless delivery!
  4. Something in silver that's been engraved like a baby cup or spoon would be easy and cheap to mail. If silver is over your limit, stainless steel baby gifts look just as good, is inexpensive and engraves well. Homemade, personalized diaper bags in smaller sizes are really cute and won't be expensive to mail and should fall under thirty dollars. Fleece baby blankets with baby's information or monogram are always admired at the shower and you can make one yourself.
  5. I was at a shower and it may cost a little more than you expect but the cutest gift I ever saw was a clothesline of babie clothes. Like buying a six pack of onesies and taking them out and pinning them to a clothes line, pick up a hat or two a couple booties. An outfit or two. It really was the cutest thing to see my cousin pulling out this clothesline and it just kept on coming. I dont know if I explained it enough to give it justice but it was a really cute idea =) Good Luck
  6. This might sound stupid, but I find it often goes down well... Why not get a nice bottle of wine (maybe a bottle of port) to be opened on the baby's 21st birthday? By that time it's bound to be a nice drop! I don't suppose it would too tricky to mail a bottle.... Actually, the more I think about it, a whole little time capsule would be a cool original idea. The child would come to think of it as a little box of treasure... On the practical side, no new mom will fail to love you if you give her nappies, bibs, babygro's and all the rest. Remember though that she'll probably get loads of newborn stuff, which will only last the baby a few weeks. Vary the sizes if you give clothes.
  7. clothes, toys, books, diapers... here's what i'm doing for a woman that i know who is having a baby (this would be a little large for you to mail, but i think it's a good idea). i'm making her a baby gift basket with all the stuff she would need for a baby like diapers, formula, spoons, dishes, a few outfits, blankets, etc. it may be a little expenisve for you so idk.
  8. if you can sew, go get 1 and 1/2 yards of two fabrics. Sew around three sides, turn right sides out fold over a inch or so, twice so outside edge doesn't show. Sew that up. Take embrod. thread and tie thru the blanket about every 6 inches. just go thru with a needle about one inch of thread then tie it off. This is a great size blanket!!! you cannot buy them this size. they fit great with the car seats, cribs etc. You can make it special by choosing pretty coordinating fabrics!!! wash and iron the fabric first.I have made these lots and everyone loves them!!! Cheap to mail also!!! what a great friend you are!!!
  9. Maybe make some personalized items for her and the baby. Burp cloths that say my mommy, with a little stick figure with hair like mom's, a diaper bag with the mom and baby's names on the front, IF you want to do something special for both of them, get bath stuff for the baby, maybe a cute towel and washcloth set with some baby soap, you can probably find a unique brand in a small size for not too much money, then get mom some special bath soaps too or a nice body lotion. Good Luck!
  10. IDEAS: Scrapbook Clothing Bottles Picture frame Toys Booties Bibs Personalized piggy bank Monitors Blankets Bath baskets sets [so cute] Ribbons for hair
  11. Personalized items are treasured forever. How about a cute, personalized sign for the nursery that accents the décor? These are handmade by a mom: http://www.mysweetandsour.com She can ship directly to Montreal for you.
