What are some gift ideas from an American student to French host family?

I am going to Etampes, France in April and I would like to give my host family some very interesting and unique gifts. Preferably, i want to give them things that they can only find in America. I cant find a website with lists of American items not available in France so I'm relying on your personal experiences. Any suggestions?

  1. Avoid anything like wine, soap, candles, cookbooks, or any kind of fashion items like scarves or shoes: gifts like that for a French person would be the equivelent of giving an American a Coke. Since the French are a very literary society and love reading, any kind of travel book on your city or state (with cool pictures) would be great. Also, a travel book with pictures of the USA would be good. Any kind of gift unique from your town will be very appreciated, too. Best of luck!
  2. I would give them the quarter books (of the diffrent American states on each quarter) (I had an exchange student and she absolutly loved it) also get them books showing your state and what it looks like and stuff :)!!! Just things u wouldnt think u would want they would really want it :)!! HAVE FUN IN FRANCE!!!
  3. Bella`s idea about book is great but i think if u buy an american wine,it will be interesting too.France is a country of wine but french wine not californian wine,u can also buy caffee the brand that is not french(like starbucks,u can buy it in any supermarket in state but there is just 1 starbucks and that one is in paris).u will see how much they will enjoy having what they like but from different countries.enjoy your stay
  4. Yep, a book would be a good idea. As Bella already said, France is full of wines, fashion items so it would be best not to think about that. It could be interesting giving them a souvenir from the USA. Also, you could think about some other country from the Americas. Maybe give them some books about the Mayas, or the Indians… Also, if you’re prepared to spend a bit more, have in mind that electronic devices are much cheaper in the USA. Also, frehcn people appreciate art, so think you could think about some art item.
