Are there any free sites or downloads I can use to help design art?

I'm looking to come up with a logo design, banners etc, for my website, and since I am an artist and better envision what I would like, plus the cost of a designer period, I have gone to various free sites for such. However, I'm not very impressed, they just give the basics for script and font, and basic icons and such, not very creative or anything like I picture the outcome being. So, to make a long story shorter, are there any sites I can use, or downloads that are free to create graphic designs. I am interested in the lettering as I've found, but need to be able to create my own imagery, say if I wanted a gorilla, I can design my own in conjuction with whatever banner or logo, then upload it to my website as a header for my domaine?
