So is the U.S. losing its lock on technology?
"The U.S. is now behind Europe in the number of scientists and engineers it graduates and no longer leads the world in innovation, which it must do to counter the exodus of manufacturing jobs to Asia. As David Baltimore, a Nobel laureate and president of the California Institute of Technology stated: 'We no longer have a lock on technology. Europe is increasingly competitive, and Asia has the potential to blow us out of the water.'' tyee And corporate America is buying firms from the outside to actually gain technology. Example: Canadian aerospace company for satellite technology. Exactly Jack and it was these Canadians from the 50s that fueled the US space race.,

- the canadian govt. stopped the sale of the aerospace co. to the us. we get to keep the jobs and technology here.in the 1950 s canada had the most advanced fighter plane in the world the avro arrow , when the conservative govt. decided to scrap plans to produce it about 50 top aircraft people went to the us. canadian are still pissed over that.
- yes, our government cut spending in research development. This includes spending in NASA which is important for space exploration. It cut the budget for research and development in the U.S. Because the budget could not maintain the faculty, they had to fire over 300 U.S. scientists. It also cut funding for the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC) which is an international committee consisting of the best physicists on the planet (consists scientists from many nations). The NuPECC are building a collider which well either give evidence or disprove quantum mechanics. Since the U.S. cut spending for the committee, the U.S. part of the committee is a lot smaller than it use to be and are not as involved. Not only that many big companies are taking their research departments into other countries with promising scientists in China and other developing nations. I doubt we will gain or spot back on the top because our government is not putting the effort or does not see the importance of being ahead of the competition. Only time will tell.
- maybe its a curse
