when did this thumbs up thumbs down thing start?

i just disappeared for a few days and now yahoo has come up with more innovations!

6. I believe the thumbs up and down started in Rome,perhaps? The gladiators would fight & when one was knocked down....the emperor would give thumbs up for the fallen to live,or thumbs down for death. Mark.
