What items were used in kitchens in the past?

I am doing an Inquiry on Blacksmiths, and this links into it.

  1. Iron pots and pans. (I'm assuming you mean past as in previous centuries?) kitchen hooks and chains - pots were hung over the fire, suspended by a hook on the end of a chain so they could be raised or lowered to adjust the heat (no dials on an open fire!) and those items were both created by a blacksmith. Many of the utensils, such as spoons, were carved from wood but cooking forks and of course, knives, would be made of metal.
  2. A spit was used to roast meat over an open fire. In grand houses this could be turned by a servant, or even a dog in a rotating cage, I kid you not, I've seen one in Bath. For ordinary folk an iron cauldron was very common, used for maling stews or pottages over the fire.
