Have you ever painted over a laminate countertop? How kid friendly and durable was it?

I know this is the parenting section but since I have kids who will probably bang into it and spill stuff on it I thought this would be the best place to ask. I have a really old house, and am trying to slowely revamp it. The kitchen counters are that ugly laminate with the gold flakes in it, so I want to paint over it. I know that there is a way to do this, cause I saw it once on HGTV, but I dont really remember how they did it. I just bought latex paint and a semi-gloss topcoat to go on top and thought that if I put about 2-3 coats of the top coat on it, it would be durable. The can says that it is durable, chip and water resistant. Have you ever done this and how did it work for you?

  1. First clean the countertop with Acetone. Prime the counter with an alcohol based primer. Paint with epoxy paint, don't use latex it will not work.
  2. I did mine. It worked fine. It lasted about two years before I scrubbed through it. Latex wouldn't be my first choice for durability, I'd at least use a floor paint. Frankly, I used an alkyd floor paint. Scuff the laminate with a fairly fine sandpaper so that the paint won't peel the first time you boil water! :)
