Does American Cheese need to be refrigerated?

I know Velveeta, obviously, doesn't need to be refrigerated before it's opened. But what about Kraft Singles? I swear I've seen them in grocery stores displayed unrefrigerated. It says Keep Refrigerated on the package, but I'm worried about it spoiling if I accidentally leave it out on the kitchen counter. Or, like I did this morning, forgetting it was in the grocery bag for about 6 hours. It was in my house, though, air-conditioned, not in a hot car or anything. Should I toss it?

  1. Yes they do they will go bad ( I left a pack out and yuk!!)
  2. 6 hours is pushing it-----I'd throw it out! I left some out for about 2 hours once-----we ate it no problem. BUT 6! Not worth the risk of getting sick!
  3. yea u should keep it in the fridge!!! or you'll get a rotten pack of american cheese!!!
  4. UGH... yes!
  5. Should be fine. I did an outdoor trip and we kept cheese for 10 days without refridgeration. Even if it molds, it's fine to just cut away the moldy part. Cheese has it's own cultures in it that help keep it from going bad. They did not have fridges 100 years ago but they did have cheese. Dipped in wax, cheese can last for a VERY long time.
  6. YES. i have one in my fridge right now.
