Where can I get a boiler designed to fit in with a modern kitchen? We are getting our kitchen re-deigned with a very modern high-gloss finish and are going to replace the boiler at the same time. A lot of the boilers are extremely ugly and I wa wondering if there any manufacturers that specialise in making 'attractive' boilers that would fit in with the decor a little more?

Can I use an inexpensive piece of pine (stained and sealed) as a kitchen countertop? I am renovating my small kitchen on a small budget ($500) and going for a modern and unique kitchen design. I am building my own cabinets. Can I use stain grade pine from Lowes/Home Depot and use it as a countertop? Will it withstand normal wear? Will it warp? What kind of stain should I use since this counter will be used for food prep? All answers would be greatly appreciated.
Kitchen Design Question? Where can I find websites of kitchen designs? I have a sort-of L-shaped kitchen, I want pictures of modern kitchens that are L-shaped or at least L shaped. Note: I need answers quick!
what color should i paint my kitchen/dining room? I have an open living room/dining and kitchen. the lr is painted a soft beige color and i need help with the kitchen/dining room. i have a contemporary/modern design kitchen with black cabinets, mosaic tile with light green, lavender and dark green colors. my countertops are granite-black/gray color. i have all stainless steel appliances and in the dining room there is a teak table with teak chairs. i'm thinking about a light, soft color such as light blues, greens or creams but i can't make up my mind. i plan to choose a flat color from benjamin moore. any suggestions on paint options will be helpful. thanks.
I am a furniture and upholstery fabrics retailer in Greece. How can I get rid all of my high quality stock? My in-store premium products are in perfect condition but their prices are too high for the existing market. I have sofas, armchairs, dinner and living room tables, chairs and kitchen furniture. The designs vary from classic to modern designs. I also have many fabrics and curtains. The brands I have been working with are market leaders of the luxury furniture market. I am closing down my business and I don't know what to do with my excess stock.Any ideas?
What kitchen design/style to go with? The people who owned my house previously had window frames painted a "country" blue and put in blue counter tops, natural maple floor and cabinets, but the appliances are "modern" black and stainless steel. Without replacing all of the appliances, how can I remodel the kitchen to match the wood and the "country" feel of all the blue? Any ideas of color for the walls, or accents in the room that will make this kitchen feel less of a hodge-podge of design? I do like the idea of replacing the countertop with slate tile! For me, the blue is too hard on the eyes, and wanted less of a country feel but did not know how to go about it. This does pose a new Q tho, can I just install the tile over the existing formica? The vertical edge surface of the countertops is a wood grain, so if we resurface the tops, the blue is eliminated. I'm sure that Q can be answered at the tile store :)
What is the style of contemporary-mixed-victorian called? Even in French we have no term for it, but it's a common design here. Like, we'll have a late 1800 vacant townhouse and renovate it with very modern touch. Is there a name for this? http://www.socketsite.com/313%20Duncan%20Montage.jpg http://www.homeideasdesign.com/kitchen-design/modern-victorian-style-kitchen-design/
IKEA kitchen cabinets, do they last? My parents are in the midst of receiving their new house keys and are now looking for kitchen cabinets. We want a full set kitchen, including the island, the fancy soft-close features, and since our kitchen is small, we need smart storage solutions. Yet, we want a good, modern/contemporary design. Looking at kitchen cabinet specialists, the good quality 'UK' spec are too expensive and the local spec looks good, but cheaply made and installed. We went to IKEA today for a quick browse and loved one of the sample full set kitchen, the price is reasonably cheap and includes their FAGOR appliances, ive experienced an IKEA bed (legs broke after 1 year), IKEA lamps (lasted 3-6 months), so does any of you experienced IKEA cabinets? Do they last long? We dont want sagging doors, cracked cabinet. And are the sizes customizable?
What modern day technology do you most struggle with and why? I'm a university design student who's been charged with a project to look into redesigning the kinds of technology that people (especially the elderly and non tech-savy) struggle with. Therefore it would be really helpful for people to let me know what kinds of modern day products they struggle to use. PLEASE AVOID COMPUTERS, KITCHEN APPLIANCES AND MOBILE PHONES. thank you!
need help with modern design scheme and other rooms? Hello! I really need help with design scheme for a few rooms. I would like to do a modern theme red, black, white, silver type colors for the living room and kitchen. I was thinking maybe light gray walls in the living room. Most of the furniture I will be getting is black. The sectional is black and gray and I thought I would get red throw pillows to put on it. In the kitchen I was thinking of painting it red but I don't know? I don't want it to be too overwhelming, any suggestions? Hoping to go with a Chef theme in there. Okay, and for other rooms I also need ideas. Boyfriend says it would be too much to continue the same colors in our bedroom and I should go for a completely different color. I love purple and blue also but I think it would look funny to have the modern theme going in the kitchen and living room then change to other colors but I could be wrong. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Opinions on trim color for finishing basement? I am finishing my basement in a more modern design with a home theater, exercise room, kitchen, an extra bedroom, office space, a wine cellar and large open game room. I am considering painting the trim black, and possibly painting or staining the doors a different color, like dk. brown. The color scheme is going to be brighter colors like kiwi green, reds and cobalt blue. The rest of the house is transitional in design with white trim and doors. I have 9' ceilings and 4 windows with several transoms of glass and glass doors to let light in, so I am not really worried about it being too dark. The flooring I have chosen for the theater is a red/geometric print, cork for the wine cellar and neutral white/brown/tan 24" tile with stainless steel accent bars. I would like to know if anyone has seen or done black trim and their opinions on it. Thanks.

Decorating my kitchen - in modern "ethnic" theme. Using green and red, we have black appliances. Any help?. ? We'd like to celebrate our Latino heritage by using vibrant colors - mainly red/green but love yellow/orange. Anyway - with our kids we have black appliances (they dont show smudgey fingerprints like stainless steel does!) So I am looking for pictures, website, clippings with similar colors for our decorating-design inspiration? Thanks! Of course its not Christmas - it's not kelly green or emerald green.... And being proud of being Latino is not un-American. How lame are you, if you think that? Why is it so American to be proud of being Irish or Italian but not Latino?
Hello. I need some suggestions on design for my kitchen. I'm out of ideas for it.? How home appliances affect kitchen design? Home appliances, as large part and companion of kitchen, often affect Kitchen design as many built-in home appliances are fitted into Kitchen body. What are major home appliances that included most in Kitchen body? Modified home appliances which have combination of function recently compared to former home appliances kept surfacing in the market. For example, microwave-oven as combination of microwave and oven. People no longer thrive to complexity, they want it easy and fast. As simple as possible, as beautiful and elegant. Home appliances today are a form of modern art. Do customers prefer a home appliances that has almost similar function one over another? If so, what are they? How this affect Kitchen design today?

How to remodel a kitchen without spending too much money? I want to completely remodel my kitchen. I'm planning on painting the cabinets instead of getting new ones, and I want new countertops, backsplash, wall color, flooring, appliances, and maybe add an island or breakfast bar (instead of a table). I want to make it modern, which tends to be expensive. How can I remodel my whole kitchen on a budget? What decorating scheme should I use? My fiance and I are moving into a really classy apartment. It's a one bedroom, one bath with beige walls and beige carpet. It also has beige tiles stretching from the kitchen to the dining area. I want to bring some color to it but stay classy and classic (he hates modern design). I need some ideas for color schemes we have no furniture yet so anything goes.
Can I paint my kitchen pink? Please, I need your design help!? Have a very pottery barn with modern twist/ eclectic home- cream/tan cabinets painted wood with black knobs and black and stainless appliances. Black rug with huge flowers-green, pink, blues, yellows. Wanted to paint wall a greenish tone, but keep getting drawn to pinks and mauves. Is it ok to use those colors in a kitchen? What do you think? Thanks!!
Design kitchen color scheme around white stove and fridge? A white fridge and stove are coming today. We are just re-coloring the kitchen (walls, cabinets, flooring) temporarily and inexpensively until we re-vamp to re-sell years later. I'd love to do a modern mocha muave slate color scheme, but I think the white will be too stark a contrast. The countertop stays for now- a marbly laminate that ranges from a beige to mocha, with mauve undertones. How do I tie in that mix with white? To what extent can we use modern neutrals? Thank you!

I am a foodie/Design addict and have been looking for a website sort of like foodporndaily.com where there is just like picture after picture of kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, etc. Not like articles or magazine websites like Architectural Digest, but where it features pics of different homes designs from modern to antique-esque. Can I mix modern with Old World style? For those interior decorators out there.... I live in an apartment and decorating is difficult. This apt has forest green carpet (I know lol) but I like this apt because it has a built in bar between the kitchen and living room. I decided to go with a wine bar theme for the place. focal point in the living room is an elec. fireplace, dark espresso finish. Modern coffee /end tables also in espresso, dark chocolate modern leather sofa and chairs, and ottomans... bright burgundy accents and pillows. Now, everything so far is modern.... I want to use all old world style accessories. Can I do this? I have antique leather bound books, treasure chests, wrought iron wall hangings and candle holders, antique pendulum clock , and tiffany style lamps. Finished color scheme would be dark brown, burgundy/wine, forest green, off white (walls), and some gold and wrought iron. Can I mix modern furniture with old world style accessories and get away with it, or is this a no no in design circles?

Desperate For Decorating Help!? I have white ceramic floor and white marble-like counters and new stainless steel appliances ( those all have to stay) the problem is I need to decide on cabinets and and wall color. The Kitchen is very modern; there are no handles on the cabinets and they take up almost an entire wall. It is a very sleek design. I am stuck! I have NO idea what colors to pick! I also have two windows that need some type of dressing up ---again modern design (?). I just moved from a Victorian house to a modern house---love the neighborhood but I can't get modern-decorating to look warm and inviting. All ideas greatly appreciated!!!!!! ****Mainly I need help with wall and cabinet color that will go with stainless steel and white. Thanks
Interior design ideas? Working with modern furniture in small condo!? I'm moving into a new condo. Long story short, it's owned by my boyfriend's uncle.... so he's giving me all of the furniture that's in there. It's a very small one-bedroom. I wish I had a picture, but I don't. It's got white walls, white carpet, white ceilings, and black furniture. Black leather sofa, black tv stand, black dining room chairs, black stools, black oriental-inspired dresser, and a black bedframe with a semi-circle headboard. The coffee table is a rectangular piece of glass over a really awesome panther-sculpture. The panther's shoulders and hips hold up the table. The only splash of color is the cabinets in the kitchen that have been painted a bright turquoise. The condo is much more modern than my tastes, but I'm willing to work with it. The only problem is.... I'm not completely satisfied with the way it looks just yet. I hate having so much white and black in a small space. I like the contrast, but it's too overwhelming. Another issue is my furniture I'm bringing with me is mostly earth colors like brown and beige. Any ideas how I could make this work? Suggestions for painting the wall another color? Or possibly the cabinets? I'm fine with turquoise but if there's another color that works better I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks!
Which room do you like best and why? Which do you prefer? Traditional: http://www.theresidenceschicago.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Traditional-Home-Interior-Holiday-Decorations.jpg Retro: http://www.ohdeedoh.com/uimages/ohdeedoh/red-retro-kitchen.jpg Modern: http://www.kickrs.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/modern-baby-room-designs-1.jpg I like all three types. In the retro room, I only like the appliances. The rest is ugly. I think the modern one is pretty cool. I like tidy rooms.
Online Design Store for home deco? Does anyone know an online store for inside home decorations? im looking for design stuff, modern and graphical! i saw i store, which i cant seem to find again, where i saw stuff like a soda can trash bin, a small red vintage fridge, pop corn buckets, office stuff and kitchen, actually everything, but like really creative and cool stuff. so i was wondering if anybody knows an online store where i can get such things?
Solution for placing chandelier over kitchen table? I own a condo, and have a unit above mine (therefore no attic). I currently have a ceiling fan in my dining area which is not where I want it. I want to replace the fan with a pendant ceiling light, however I will also need to move it about 2 feet. Now, it seems like I could keep the existing electrical box and cover it wth a place, and run a chain/wire, and place a hook in the ceiling directly above the kitchen table. The problem is that every light that I like comes on a rod, not a chain. And when I search for chandeliers, all I find are huge, ugly, expensive ones. Is there something I'm missing? I'd love an urban / modern / contemporary looking light that's a simple design, nickle color, that I can hang from a chain. Is there a way to position a pendant light on a rod, in the way that I want? Or is there a way to convert a pendant to a chain? Here's one I like: http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/Chandeliers/Style_Contemporary/page_2/13922/ Another light I like: http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/Chandeliers/Style_Contemporary/page_3/28262/ Below, gauth suggests to hang the light from the pendant rod using a hook. However, the pendant rods have a plate at the top, don't they? Do pendant rods somehow have a way to attach them to a hook?
kitchen cabinet question? I'm rehabbing a house as my first home. I found a bunch of nice spice maple cabinets that were used and I bought them and am going to install them in my kitchen (has been completely ripped out and is being rebuilt). I have enough to make a U pattern kitchen with the cabinets but I was thinking I might wanna go a little more modern then that and instead of a 90 degree angle for one of the sides of the U, I'd do like a 135 degree angle. |_ / sort of design. Few questions here. Has anybody done this and had success with it? It's a rectangle size room so the remaining 90 degree angle would be in a corner. Would I just need to "edit" a cabinet to make this possible? Any other possible concerns? Thanks!
Need your help with kitchen redecorating! :)? I have an older, character home. Kitchen has high ceiling with tall, white cabinets which I like. I will replace the 80's chunky, light gray porcelain handles with stainless steel bar pulls (I like a modern look). Walls are light gray with chair rail. trim is a bit darker (like regular gray) and floor is gray and white marble design linoleum. Counter top is light gray. Back splash tile is light gray with the occasional wine coloured tile. I have a sharp looking black ceiling fan with halogen lights, a black topped stove, a funky black chair and some black small appliances. I will buy a black fridge when all the painting is done. Ok.. now the questions: 1. If I keep the walls light gray, should I go lighter or darker with the trim? White trim or a darker gray? Should I keep the walls pale gray? 2. I need suggestions for colors for the ceramic tile floor. 3. Suggestions for a new counter top if I have money leftover? Any other comments you'd like to make would be super appreciated!! Thanks!! dee
Do YOU have a good interior design suggestion? Currently, my home interior company is working on a large apartment in Northeast Ohio in a city based area. We are expecting a 20 something couple to move in. Their likes are "Americana" design, Old Country or Primitive, and modern day design. <> We would like suggestions from 20 something people as well on what they would like to see in their apartment. First let me give you an overall visual of the apartment. <> We are working with 3 bedrooms and a large living room, all in which have a medium blue colored carpet (at request) with dark walnut trim. All walls are white. We have a medium sized bathroom that is all white at the moment with a white and gold floor. The kitchen has a beigh floor, white walls and walnut trim. <> Mainly we are asking for THEMES for the rooms. We are open to any suggestions. If the couple likes an idea we use from Yahoo! Answers, then there will be a reward for the answeree who gave the suggestion. This reward is TBA since we have yet to show the couple what we have come up with. <> Thanks! -Quita Marietta- Interior Illusions
Books on helping how to describe houses, physical appearance and etc.? Do you know where I can buy a book that can help me how describe physical appearance, house furnitures, weather, feelings, andsuch into writing? It would be so much better if I can learn it online (for free). If not, it's okay. I really want to better my writing and I'm not..experienced enough to describe physical apperance and fancy house furnitures like.. a fancy couch, a wooden bed with elegant silk sheets. If you know what I'm saying. And also clothing. These are what I've learned: Describing house furnitures: She followed him into the spotless, ultra-modern kitchen. There was a stainless-steel center island for cooking, a restaurant quality double oven against one wall, and a red Swedish table and matching chairs that could have fit easily in the design wing of The Museum Of Modern Art. For once, none of the household staff was lurking. Describing clothing: I decked out in a little Dolce & Gabbana silver and gold lame dress, which seems awfully fancy for a late-morning shopping trip. But I managed to dress it down with opaque black tights, casual ballet flats and chunky gold jewelry. Yeah, I read those on a book. And I really need more help. Maybe a book tutorial could help my writing to be more detailed.
Should I paint oak cabinets white? I'm redoing my house with the intention of selling it. The entire rest of the house is designed with the latest trends, but the kitchen was remodeled in the mid 80's and has those honey colored oak cabinets. I'm replacing the counters with something very current, but the honey oak look hasn't been trendy for a very long time. If I paint them white, the kitchen will look like a modern kitchen. But I'm worried that maybe buyers will like the wood look more than the white look. What do you think? Home design magazines rarely have the oak cabinets anymore, but a lot have white. Do you like oak cabinets? What about white? These aren't my cabinets, but this is kind of what they look like, only a bit more weathered. It doesn't matter if i personally like them or how functional they are, just how they look to a potential buyer. I've never stained anything, that scares me a bit. It sounds so hard! Thanks for the tip on the mineral spirits and linseed oil! Yea, I will never understand people spending crazy amounts of money redoing their house to sell. 75,000 is an awful lot of money to gamble with! I feel pretty confident that I will recoup my investment. I plan to spend about 3,000 for the whole house and do the work myself. Fortunately a wonderful floor plan and many upscale details are already in place, they just need to be polished and highlighted. There were 3 other offers that came in right after we had signed the contract, so I know what a great property we have and I think we can make a little money. We have a lot of equity anyway, so we can weather it if it doesn't make anything. I think I will keep the cabinets as-is and polish them with the mineral spirits and linseed oil. I looked that up and there were some gorgeous examples of wood given that treatment!
Adaptable Housing? Hi. I'm doing a project at school for adaptable housing. Can you give me ideas how a kitchen design can be sustainable, use adaptable housing practices and principles, in emerging technology of modern life? Websites will help a lot. Thank you! =D
Dream about someone falling in love with me? Last night I had the weirdest dream ever. It might be a bit long but please read it? please???? ............................................................. There was this guy, and I guess he came over to my house and my parents and my relatives were there but just family. We were all having a conversation then I go into the kitchen to get something and this guy follows me there and he grabs my arm, ushers me to another room and starts declaring his love! I'm really confused because I have no idea who this guy is,I'm just standing there bewildered. Then one of my relatives suddenly barges in and the guy stops talking, composes himself and walks out of the room as if nothing happened. All of a sudden, I'm swept to the dinner table and the man (who I STILL don't know) and stands up looking frantic and starts describing his love in front of EVERYONE, then I'm back in the kitchen again and all my FEMALE relatives are firing all these questions but for some reason I can't say anything besides "I didn't do anything" "I didn't talk to him" "No, I didn't get involved with him". Then I'm in a car where I can hear my mom asking questions and all I caught was "He said something about your smell and how nice it was... what were you wearing?" then she drifted out and I said something distractedly like "I wasn't wearing any perfume.." (sorry this is so long but it's still very fresh in my mind) I sort of black out and we're at this house with wooden floors and modern design and modern etc. again all my relatives are there and they've all got either a disapproving expression or a scowl on their faces. I sort of realise this is the unknown guy's house and he comes out of nowhere holding a a glass of whiskey and after him come these two running kids! and as soon as I see their faces I recognise them, They're my mom's best-friend's children! Then he starts explaining how his wife died years ago.. Then he's all like "But I've seen how this affects you're family and I'm willing not to start anything.." then I wake up. I swear through the whole dream I was brain dead because I was just looking around wandering what the FUCK was happening! WHAT JUST HAPPENED HERE?! If you made it this far, THANK YOU! Can you PLEASE help me?!! Just to help though- I still don't know who that man is, My mom's BFF is NOT dead, Her husband actually scares me... a bit, I am not currently dating anyone or interested in anyone. oh yes and the man was I don't know like 30? and I'm 18. This is driving me nuts right now, anyone? Haha No, I don't think it's an arranged marriage. In the dream, My parents or anyone there for that matter didn't know what the hell the guy was saying.... =]
Design inspiration for kitchen tile . . .? Our kitchen is a bit dated so we're going to start over, take off the counter tops, new sink, flooring, tile backsplash, etc. I have no idea where to start at all & it's giving me a headache. The sites I've found so far are way over the top design ideas like custom painted mural type stuff or homes that are super modern or extravagant and none of those look like my house. Do you know of any good sites to get some ideas for the average homeowner? We're going for more modern but warm, crown molding, white trim on doors, with some warmth in the wall colors. I just want something that isn't going to scream 2010 tile idea in 10 years, you know? Thanks very much :-)

Lift (Elevator, past owner was disabled) 'Grand' stairs in foyer and 2 other back stairs Architect Design Quite Modern Library Indoor Pool Large kitchen and dining room Large garden Little passage ways through the house, and secret rooms for the previous' owner grandkids House #2 10 bedrooms, 4 ensuit, 4 walk in wardrobes Play room (Last owners had kids, and this room has murals all over the walls) 3 stairs throughout the house Large kitchen & Dining room Slightly smaller garden Built in 4 car garage Greenhouse More Regal than house #1 20 mins from my family Both houses are in a private, resedential estate. Both are very safe, I'm opting for house #1, because it's close to my family, so the kids can go over to my younger siblings any time, and they can attend the same schools. And it has a nice pool and big garden. If you had a choice, which house would you choose? I know I haven't given a lot of information, but just which house. My fiancés 3 siblings live with us, we're their guardians, and we have twins of our own due on Christmas Eve. Yes home is where you feel happy & where the family is. We live in Ireland, we moved from the UK last year, and nobody's happy so everyones moving home. And my parents never sold their house, so they're going back to that house. My fiancé & I need a house because I was living with my parents in the Uk
where can I find a recipe box in the South Bay area? I'm looking for a recipe box as a gift for a bridal shower; the idea being all her friends will fill out a recipe card to give her. The problem is, I can't find a recipe box. I've found one or two but the designs are not her style. (she likes more modern stuff, her kitchen is going to be black and white with red cherries) I would prefer a box to a binder, but at this point, I'm a little desperate. Does anyone in the Torrance/South Bay area know of a place that carries recipe boxes? I've tried Amazon, Hallmark, Target, Papyrus, Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Tuesday Morning, Office Depot, Sur la Table, Borders, Barnes and Noble, and Home Goods. I'm completely out of ideas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Where can I find the funky looking posable multi arm/bulb lamp used in Design On A Dime Ep. 1310 (15 Sept 09)? This lamp was used in the "Sports Themed Bedroom" on Design on a Dime episode 1310 which re-ran on 15 Sept 09. You can see it here: http://www.hgtv.com/decorating/sports-themed-bedroom/pictures/page-3.html and a similar looking one was also used in Colorsplash "High End Modern Italian Kitchen On A Budget" episode which re-ran on 16 Sept 09. Any information anyone is willing to share will be greatly appreciated! Edit to add: I did extensive web-searching (including Target) before I started this enquiry. Again, any information (including what one might call the lamp to aid in searching) will be appreciated!
How to create a Modern Bar at Home? I just moved in a new place and I'm trying to create a modern design in every single space which is what i always wanted. Now that I have the money to do so I bought many great products and spent a lot of time choosing colors and styles. I finally arrived to the kitchen in which I have some extra space so I thought about creating a bar space for morning breakfasts with family or to have few drinks when friends are passing by. That being said, I need to choose a bar table and some bar stools matching it. Since I am focused on Modern Designs I went on a website name FineBarStools (http://www.finebarstools.com) which offers a pretty awesome collection of modern furniture. About the Bar Table, I am actually hesitating between 2 of them : - The Chardonnay Table which is a hit but seems to be have a top a little small for breakfasts (http://www.finebarstools.com/store-products-621111-Chardonnay-Bar-Table_1097388492.html) - The Lemon Drop Counter Table which is a little shorter but has a bigger top (http://www.finebarstools.com/store-products-601102-Lemon-Drop-Counter-Table_1097388490.html) My concern is one of them really has a bar style and the other is in between dining and bar. Which one would provide me the coolest style at home? About the Bar Stools, it's even worse because to many choices are offer in there ... - Barber Bar Stool (http://www.finebarstools.com/store-products-300160-Barber-Bar-Stool_1097599232.html) : This stool only offers one color (white which will match the colors choose for my bar ... black, white, red) but this bar stool seems strong and easy to clean. It's also a swivel one with a back. - Butcher Bar Stool (http://www.finebarstools.com/store-products-300280-Butcher-Bar-Stool_1097599277.html) : This one has a great look but it's a backless bar stool ... - Topsy Bar Stool (http://www.finebarstools.com/store-products-301301-Topsy-Bar-Stool_1097388483.html) : Bar stool with a back, available in black but in leather (so a little harder to clean than the Barber bar stool). However I truly love the design of it. Should I focus only on the design, should I get backless bar stools to gain space ? Is the white color a real bad choice since it's showing dirt easily ? Haaaaaa !!!!!!! If I spend more time thinking about that I'm quite sure to get bold before to be 30 years old so I'm looking for advices from people who already created their own bar and made mistakes. I desperate right 'cause I just can't take a decision so tell me what's your thoughts and I hope it will help me make up my mind !!
National Historic Place Register...could my house be on it? ok so my house was originally built in 1825 and was supposedly a stop on the underground railroad. throughout its history, some noteable people and families have lived there (maybe not ntl. names, but def local for my city) it was also designed by a famous architect in my city in 1900, after it burned down. since then, the interior style has remained much the same, with some exeptions including the kitchen (modern appliances, style and the paint and architecture throughout the house, which isnt anywhere close to what the original color scheme would be. also, the exterior is painted an olive green, as opposed to the original white. do you think that it could possibly be added to the nhpr (dont know if thats even what its called but u kno what i mean right??) o ya and when it burned down in 1900 the walls still stayed in tact so the original 1825 walls are still there, they just changed the style and built a 2nd floor.... o yess and also the first governor of my state (unnamed for privacy reasons) most likely brought the gingko tree in our back yard over from china...and general lafayette (from rev. war) visited our house at one point
editing assistance? ~My Condo I lived in a modernization two-bedroom apartment for two years. In the family room, I had a big aquarium. I had a wall unit that included book shelves. There was a comfortable sofa, a plasma television, under television table was a Sony DVD player, to west word wall was the computer, and other different items. There were pictures and a big map of the world on the wall of my bedroom. The kitchen in my apartment had a TV, a dinette table to the north-west wall, a microwave oven was hung below the top of the drawers , a blender, a toaster, and a juicer. Each room in my apartment was well lay-out, Also, from the family room windows, you were able to see our gorgeous swimming pool. It was 60 meters long and filled with blue water. As you can see from the above condo description I lived in a modern, well designed, and organized home. fix any possible errors you see. thank you.
ideas on how to redesign my house? Here's a video of what my first floor looks like..Yes i know it is very messy and ugly....I need to update it! I like modern interior design, like Ikea, and stuff. Also, I don't know where my living room is because where it is now is a very awkward room. It is right beside the kitchen and is too small for any furniture, and no place for the TV. The other room is attached to the dining room which is also an awkward place for a living room. Help!!! http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa99/veronicazchic/?action=view¤t=thehouse.mp4
What would be the best replacement for my Ideal Mexico 2 boiler? I have an old (maybe 15 years) Ideal Mexico 2 (model number inside the top flap appears to be an Ideal Mexico 2 RS75P), Propane/LPG fuel with heat input of 29.8kW (101.5BTu) and heat output of 22.7kW (77.5BTu). It has become increasingly costly to run, presumably as its efficiency drops, plus of course modern boiler design has moved on masses in the intervening period. The current boiler is floor standing, but there is no absolute need for a floor standing replacement though it would be marginally more convenient. I need to find a Sedbuk A replacement if possible with perhaps a little more oomph than the current boiler which struggles to keep everything warm during the coldest spells in my 4 bed detached house in a rural location (with planned conservatory, floor area approaches 2000sq ft (185m2). I am assuming that a condensing boiler is going to be the way to go, but am unsure what make or model to consider. I have a kitchen, family bathroom and downstairs shower room for hot water demand on top of pressed steel radiator heating. pipe strangler, I do live in the middle of nowhere - rural location in North Essex near Suffolk border - no town gas anywhere near! BTW someone else suggested a weather compensator - anyone got any views on the effectiveness of these? Thanks for answers so far. Hi Turdy Malurdy, Any idea what kind of cost the alpha system is?
What do you thing of this book? Is a two point of view paper please be honest! Lucky Charm In the middle of winter, I was still in the rectangular cardboard box. I was made last week, and a brand new kind too. I am size eleven, and my colors where midnight black, and snow white. My kind was very popular, but somehow I was still in the store. By early April a woman with light brown hair, and really tan skin bought me. She looked like she was in her early forties or late thirties. By that I knew that she was going to send me to her son. The ride was long and I could not see much from the little hole of the box. A few minutes later we were in front of a house, which was pasty, with the doors, windows, and the garage door ginger. The inside of the house was in extremely neat, and amazedly cool. When you enter everything is in an old Japanese and Chinese style, The Kitchen is modern, but the ones that you see in a Hollywood house design by professionals. The Dining Room is style just like the Kitchen. The Living Room was awesome, made me feel like I was in Africa. The room is decorated excellently that it’s impossible not to want the room for your own. The mother started to walk up the brown spiral stairs. At first I thought she was going to stop in the second floor, but she kept going up until we stop at the Attic. The Attic was pretty big, and the style was skater with punk and rocker kind. The room had a small living room in the middle of the room with a plasma TV. The far right corner was a half circle, with the wall as a big window. There was also a king size round bed that fit perfectly against the wall. In the other right corner there was a walk-in closet, while at the far left corner there was a bathroom which was being used by my soon to be owner. “Shane, can you hurry up in there! I got something to show you,” sang the mother with happiness in her eyes. From the bathroom door a strong, but light voice shouted, “I am kind of busy using the toilet right know, if you haven’t notice.” “I don’t care you get your butt out here right now!” “No!” … “I bought you something form DVS.” … FLUSH! The door opened so fast that I thought it was going to break. “What did you buy me?” Questioned a light, yet dark long shaggy brunette hair guy, with tight black jeans, and neon green Vans. He had no shirt on, so you could see his built, yet small muscles. He was really skinny, but had enough meat on him to not make him look anorexic. His height was about “5’9, and had a perfectly looking face with sky blue eyes to match. Looking at him made something in me click, and I realize that this guy, I mean Shane, was from now on my owner. “I bought you a Lucky Charm,” answered his mom. “Ma, that it’s sick! I mean awesome! You are the best!” sang Shane with the same happiness in his eyes like his moms. “Here take it, “ sighed his mom while handing me over to Shane, “I got to do you and Rikku’s dirty dishes.” “ Ah! Come on Ma they are not that bad,” lied Shane. “For you, yeah caused you don’t have to do them!” “Sorry Ma, but my hands are not good with that.” “Spoiled little brat,” muttered his mom while she went down stairs. When is mom was out of view, Shane opens the box and asked, “Hey Lucky Charm, ready to do some skateboarding?” ~#&#@$~ It was raining like crazy, and I was in a terrible mood, of course Shane notices which got us in this conversation. “Come on Luc, its not that bad,” pleaded Shane. Ha! Have you seen how muddy it is, and I sure as hell not going to be bathing in that. Shane could still see how mad I was. “Come on, man it’s not that far away. The house is only half a mile away from here. Besides it’s not going to be that bad. You know you have been through worst.” Why did we have to come to the stake park in a nasty day like this? However, when he said that I knew he meant the time that we where hiking in south entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park, which is very close to are home town Tusayan. While we were hiking my shoelaces got stuck in a branch that unfortunately was very thick. Shane didn’t notice so he kept walking which made my shoelaces break, and now they are tied up to keep them together. Also one of my aglets is missing, and the shoelaces look really worn out. He also means the time that he was running from the cops because he graffiti, “JOKER” on the 1:00 A.M. train. The bottom of me couldn’t take the running so it got worn out and rip in the bottom back from a nail in the train tracks. Certainly he also means the time he got Rikku very mad, he was making fun of her new anime Goth style dress, so Rikku, his little sister, scratch the inside back of me to make a small hole. Out of all this I new something, Shane was with all his heart sorry for me. Remembering all of that made me sight, and let Shane run with me to cross the small distance from the skate park and on to his backyard to his house. When we got inside

What is a good house for my Sims 2 family? I have a new family, one adult couple, two teens (one boy, one girl), and a small pet dog. I am looking for a house with 3 bedrooms 1.5-2 bathrooms (preferably one on each floor), a living room with a TV, either a game room or home office with a computer, and a one or two-door garage with a (sport-)car(s). I'd also like the rooms to be modern but still simple. And the house must have a kitchen with good appliances, a dog bed, a dog dish, and a few other pet items. It would be nice to have a pool/hot tub too. Price is no object but I don't really want a huge fancy 3-story mansion. I have the following Sims 2 Expansion Packs: Glamour Life Stuff IKEA® Home Stuff Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff Nightlife Pets Seasons and Teen Style Stuff I was thinking of something sort of like this: http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=741692&searchPage=exch&search=1&asset_type=lot&key=&order=CREATION_DATE+desc&nrows=8&game_version=&custCont=&zoneType=-1&lotSize=&lotLevel=&apartmentSize=&lotValue=&familyFund=&familyWorth=&familySize=&locality=&country=&view=feature&hideFramework=&languageCode= but with a garage and some pets stuff. It DOESN'T have to be like that! It was just a suggestion as to the type of place I'm looking for..

Renovating a victorian house? Im in the design process of renovating a victorian house. My question is should I introduce old elements into the house such as a traditional bathroom and kitchen or go all modern? My husband and I love an all white scheme, as the house is quite small and we feel will open it up and modernize a traditional look. We love claw baths and old fireplaces... We are worried we will spend all this money and in 5 years when we plan to sell, no one will want to buy it as its quite traditional.. Thanks for your thoughts in advance guys!!
What do you consider your.....? sense of design style for your house--ultra modern, shabby chic, Brady Bunch-is (linoleum, paneling, anything avocado in the kitchen, and wallpaper everywhere) OR anything goes (not one type of style whatsoever?

can you write a descriptive paragraph about "your dream house"? ok, i did mine, but it needs some editting, could somebody help me? MY DREAM HOUSE: When you first enter the enormous house from the front door, which was yellow-colored with gilded flowery designs, you will get in an impressive spacious living room with large glass windows, surrounded by pretty large curtains making the scene uniquely nice. A small purple sofa is put facing the window. A huge modern TV was placed by the wall, and you can find speakers in every corner of the room. There’s another purple sofa with pillows stitched “home sweet home” in front of the TV. A beautiful fireplace is put in the room to make it look warm. There are monumental picture frames, very vivid to be seen, all were placed beside each other nicely. The kitchen is a picturesque, a beautiful eating table made of glass is placed in the center, and chairs covered with white leather. As you go upstairs you will find the bedroom made in a white-pink combination. The walls and the floor are white, and the bed and curtains, as well as some decorations are pink, which gives the room a special touch. There’s a door which leads to the dressing room, a room that’s filled with different types of clothes and shoes, there’s also a big mirror with lights which made the room look like a fashion show stage.
Is this a good meet-up for a romance to be? 10pts? Hey 10 pts to detailed, helpful critques, thanks to everyone who answers. Note: this is a few chapters in. The main character is a man, Rachelle is the Leaders girlfriend. Camilla is Rachellr's sister and law and Nora is Camilla's daughter -- I let the Leader open the gate before me, and we walked up the path to the door, with a pot of colourful flowers hanging down on each side. A young girl, about twenty years old, opened the door to us. She had loose, blonde wavy hair that was held by a claw-clip, mysterious grey eyes and a face that showed she was rushing. She wore an open blue cardigan, a lighter and longer blue top underneath and a large studded belt on top and dark jeans. “Sir,” she said to the Leader. “Come in.” She held the door wide open to let us in and she smiled at me. “Nora,” she introduced, extending her hand for a shake. “Jone,” I replied. The interior design was just as modern as the exterior. It was bright, colourful and had lots of space. Nora told us to sit down whilst she fetched Rachelle and brought us something to drink. On the glass coffee table before the sofa was a sketch pad with a rough drawing of a dress. I was admiring the artistic skills when I heard someone enter the room. A lady of about forty entered from the kitchen, sitting in her wheelchair. She had thin, light brown hair that had begun to grey at the roots, wrinkles that had begun to settle around her small, bored eyes and thin lips that were set in a straight line. Her lips cornered up slightly, as though she could only smile so much. “It is nice to see you, sir,” she said. Her voice was monotonous. “You too, Camilla. This is Jone Mead, one of my most special employees.” I smiled at the compliment and bowed my head to Camilla. She nodded back and wheeled closer to the sofa, but remained quiet. The Leader stood up as Rachelle walked down the stairs, with Nora trailing behind. The couple embraced and I stood to be formally and finally introduced. “Rachelle Young,” she curtsied. “It is lovely to meet you; I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about you.” Despite my earlier unfair judgements about her vulgarity, I liked the way she spoke with confidence and politeness. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too.” “I’ll just get some coffee,” Nora said. “Let me help you,” I offered. She thanked and beckoned me to follow her into the kitchen. She looked energetic, happy and almost restless. I bulked up the courage to make conversation, it surprised me. I wasn’t a person to make small talk, especially with strangers. “So,” I began, but my voice came out wrong, broke. I coughed to clear my throat. “So, was that your fashion sketch?” “Yep, it’s a work in progress. Like it?” “It’s great, you’ve got great skill.” “Thank you,” she beamed, in a sweet little-girl voice. She got out the cups was lip-singing, bobbing her head along with the tune. "I've always wanted to be a fashion designer," she said suddenly. "Have you always wanted to be a senior member of parliament?" It took me a moment to reply. I had never heard of or seen Nora before, but she knew about me. “No, actually I wanted to be singer.” She turned, interested. “You can sing?” I smiled and laughed lightly. “No.” Nora laughed too, only she was louder than me. I poured the coffee into the mugs as Nora got out the tray and she carried it carefully back to the living room. The Leader and Rachelle were indulged in conversation, and though they didn’t seem to be leaving Camilla out, the quiet woman didn’t pay interest. “Ah, thank you,” the Leader said, taking the coffee as Nora offered. Nora gave her mother a cup and everyone else helped themselves. I sipped the hot drink as the conversation continued. “I came here to personally invite you all to the Annual School Purity Awareness Day,” the Leader said. He then asked me to take out the leaflet, and I did so, resting them on the table before me. “We’d be delighted,” Rachelle said instantly, looking at Nora and Camilla for agreement. Nora nodded and thanked the Leader for the invitation and Camilla managed to do the same, she was kind but not enthusiastic. I felt wrong to wonder why she constantly looked so empty, but I did appreciate her politeness. Not long after we got ready to leave. “It was lovely to meet you all,” I said to the three women. Nora and Rachelle accompanied us to the door after Camilla said goodbye. Rachelle and the Leader hugged and Nora gave me a huge smile and a wave as I looked back at her when I stood at the gate. I was looking forward to see her again at the event. -- x Thanks for the stars :) but some answers/suggestions, even if only small would be helpful
Is it a bad idea to have an European cottage exterior with a contemporary interior? I am designing a house for myself that I love. On the outside it's a cute country cottage but on the inside, it is very high-end, contemporary. It's not SUPER cold and contemporary but still modern, especially the bathrooms and kitchen. The thing that I wonder about is the resale potential. I think that I would be limiting my buyers market buy designing it this For those that want an old world exterior, probably want an oldworld interior. Same thing for those that love modern. They want a modern exterior to go with the modern interior. Would it be a bad idea to do this? Especially for resale? And it will probably catch people off guard when they enter.
design ideas? help please? my house in through living room and very modern, i have black gloss kitchen and furniture with red blinds and rug, the walls are White at the moment but i find them cold and boring. what colour will go nice with red and black? im also think wallpaper on one wall
Best heating options for an old house without ducts or a conventional heater.? My mother lives in a very old home in Buffalo NY. It's about a 1000 SQFT, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 laundry room and living room and kitchen. The only heating sources are an old gas burning stove in the living room and a very old oven with vents on the side designed to be a heater. I'm planning on replacing the oven with a new one in a few weeks. Since modern ovens aren't designed to heat rooms, I need to figure out a good alternative to heat the house. There is very little insulation in the house so it get extremely cold during the winter. Are there any space heaters that won't burn out while heating several rooms during a cold Buffalo winter, possibly running continuously? I've seen large units that mount on the wall in Japan, but I can't find anything similar online and I'm afraid of smaller units burning out their motor. Or are there any other suggestions to keep the house warm? Thanks! I'm hoping to find a solution for a few hundred dollars, otherwise, I won't be able to replace her oven.

Design Question - Brown Throw Rug on Off-White Berber Carpet? Hi there, I bought a v modern condo, most everything is off-white (carpet, paint) with black kitchen applicances. Found a dark brown wool rug on sale at Pier One for dirt cheap so I lugged it home. i like earth tone colors but wonder if y'all think that a solid throw rug on white carpet is too strong contrast. i only have two soft lime green bucket chairs, a subdued red japanese trunk with a gold monkey on it as a small side table, and an oversized black chair w/ottoman that serves as couch - this has very small light brown, off-white polka dots on it. they're all hand-me downs and i'm making do. i really like the shag throw rugs with speckles of colors but can't afford that now. any design ideas for around this rug on a budget? or save the budget, return it quick... thanks!
Help building / designing dream house? I want to build a three story "castle" like house, but on a modern home scale. I am planning on having about 4 acres of land to build on so a decent sized house. I already have my rough draft of my first floor, floor plan drawn out. I will take any ideas for room sizes, room locations, etc. I want the third story to have an observatory area extending through the roof, along with my master bedroom. The master bedroom will also have a balcony extending outside facing the front and rear of the estate. The second story is mainly guest beds and bathrooms, and such. The first floor will have a large kitchen, decent sized den a foot lower than the rest of first floor level, a library and a foyer. A decent sized basement for storage and laundry. Each corner of the house will have a hexagonal style tower design to bring out more of the castle like feel. This will also add a bit more room and aura for the dining room, library and guest rooms. I still plan on putting about another year or two into the basic plans before I start with the other things., and I am sure things will change. I do plan on using stone, adding a pond, having a circular driveway with an extended entrance driveway lined with trees (not sure on the trees, landscaping will come last). Maybe some stained glass here and there. As far as design programs, should I use AutoCAD? I am sure once I get my floor plans done, an actual architect will want to rearrange them a lot, but I want to get the basic design to my vision before he/she modifies it. I will take any opinions/ideas generously.
Is our granite edge really a big deal? Our contractor made a mistake and had the fabricator give us a bullnose edge when we wanted an eased (more square) edge. I feel like bullnose is a modern look and we are going for a more vintage/bungalow style kitchen to fit with the rest of our house and decor. Our contractor will do our hardwoods at no cost if we stick with the bullnose (cheaper for him than to buy us a new slab) and it would save us $2,000. But I'm afraid I'll regret it and never be truly happy with our kitchen after putting in months of planning the design and heaps of money. Should I hold tight, delay the project, and request the eased edge on a new slab? Or take the savings instead and hope I am still happy with the outcome?

How to choose Room divider curtain? Hi, I live in a studio apartment with very very old kitchen appliances and Ebony color cabinets. I wanted to shield the bad view of the kitchen from the living space and installed a brown curtain rod (12ft length) at a height of 7ft from carpeted floor. The side walls are cream color painted but one wall is brick. The other area of the room is modern with lake view balcony. I like modern style, warm look. Please help me answer the following questions. 1) What height of the curtain is perfect? 7ft, which brings it all the way to the floor? 2) What color to choose? It has to be clean in the day as well as romantic(yep for special occasions :) )in the night preferably with yellow lamp lighting. Personally I like red. Will it work? 3) What kind of fabric to choose? 4) Plain or design? Thanks, Krish.
I hear “I don’t believe in Evolution because I don’t understand it” a LOT on Y!A. Question: Have you TRIED to? Question: Why, if you do not believe in Evolution because you feel life is “Too Complicated”, do you spend hours reading the bible, watching sitcoms, talking on the phone, researching that recipe, downloading porn… Whatever you spend hour after hour doing, just to kill time, yet you refuse to take even a single hour out of your life to use the SAME SEARCH ENGINE that led you to that “Perfect” pair of pants at GAP to even TRY and understand the basis of ALL LIFE on this planet? Body Text: To me, saying “I don’t believe in Evolution because I don’t understand it” is like saying “I think Microwaves run on magic because I don’t understand it.” When I questioned how a microwave worked, I sat down at my computer and turned on Discovery Science Channel, and I did some research and now I get the GENERAL principals behind how a microwave works. The SAME can be done for the topic of Evolution. There is even a show on History Channel called “Evolve” that, every week, describes the different aspects that most carbon based life forms share and explains how they came about… I’m watching the episode on “Skin” right now… I have “Sex”, “Guts”, & “Eyes” on my DVR… I have taken half an hour out of my life to set my DVR to record some shows about evolution, and now I have a better understanding of the process of evolution and how ALL life on earth is connected through the evolution of various components… I have a MONTH’S worth of episodes on my DVR right now and instead of “Channel Surfing” and finding mindless sitcoms or reality TV shows to watch, I’m sitting down and watching a documentary on evolution. After that? The last new episode of Modern Marvels about the most dangerous roads. After that? I might watch America’s Test Kitchen. After that? The secret lives of women form Oxygen. After that? The South Park episode called “The Losing Edge”. I have taken some free time and gone to http://www.livescience.com and I have read their articles on Evolution… Again, I’m not an “Expert” but now I have an even deeper understanding of how you can take a basic structure like keratin and tweak it to form hair, feathers, scales… How each animal on earth seems completely different from each other yet each aspect of our bodies is merely a tweak on a single basic design. I’m not an “Expert” now that I have watched a few documentaries and read some articles, but now I at least UNDERSTAND how these processes are POSSIBLE… NOW I can start to connect the dots when I read/see even more NEXT week… THAT is why I believe that Evolution is plausible and real… I have put forth the same effort to understand the Christian bible… I have read it, I have studied it, I have gone in and put the same effort in to understanding the basis for a major religion and it just doesn’t hold up. Creation is basically saying “Things are too complicated so that means a god must have been involved.” Yet when you do the most superficial study of Evolution, you see that it isn’t so complicated… Saying that ANYTHING is “Too complicated” to understand is a cop out because you’re unwilling to take the time to do even the most superficial research on a topic… I know people that won’t even bake a TURKEY because they say it is “Too Complicated” and such defeatist attitudes make me ILL! Turning a blind eye to SIMPLE DOCUMENTATION because you are afraid that comprehension of a topic will make Baby Jesus Cry is NOT “Refuting Evidence” against evolution. Using your own willful ignorance as your REASON behind not ‘believing’ a scientific reality goes against the whole scientific method…
How can I arrange my bedroom to utilize space more efficiently? I live in a small apartment, I have one bedroom/living area, a separate kitchen and bathroom. I'm trying to figure out how to utilize the space I have in my bedroom/ living area the best way. I have one single bed, a large desk, a small closet, a small shelf, a t.v./stand, and a chair. I live in a big city, and finding a larger apartment for a reasonable price would be next to impossible at the moment. I would also like to add some design to to the place. Its got white walls, and I have light wood furniture and floors. I would really like a little more modern look, maybe with grey walls and accent colors like on my bed or something... I am a college student, so I do have a minimal budget. I don't know but any suggestions on how to arrange/decorate my room would be awesome!
designing the bedroom???? my bf is moving into his parents rv for a couple months till he can find a house he wants to buy. its got a HUGE living room and bedroom and a full size shower and a huge kitchen. its bout 40 ft long. well. i get to decorate.. for the bedroom im thinkin a blue color scheme since he loves blue..but idk what to base the blue color scheme on..im thinking something..modern but im not sure..any ideas????
interior design help!!!? I'm now shopping for window treatments in the living room, but don't know what color to shop for that will enhances the room. our living room and the kitchen is one room separated by an island and the flooring. the living room area is a beige color carpet and the kitchen is tile in the color of different shade of beige. the wood cabinet in the kitchen is a cross between an oak/walnut stain. with granite countertop. also some shade of beige with black dots and gray. We have a leather corner sectional in the color cream. I know it's kind of confusing without pictures, but i kinda feel that the window treatment should not be another color of beige or cream. what color should I get for the roller shade that will end up behind one corner of the sectional? our wall is eggshell white. btw, I was aiming for a modern contemporary look for the room, but kind of sophisticated.
wht do u think bout this ppl? From coffee to cheques and the three-course meal, the Muslim world has given us many innovations that we in the West take for granted. Here are 20 of their most influential innovations: (1) The story goes that an Arab named Khalid was tending his goats in the Kaffa region of southern Ethiopia, when he noticed his animals became livelier after eating a certain berry. He boiled the berries to make the first coffee. Certainly the first record of the drink is of beans exported from Ethiopia to Yemen where Sufis drank it to stay awake all night to pray on special occasions. By the late 15th century it had arrived in Makkah and Turkey from where it made its way to Venice in 1645. It was brought to England in 1650 by a Turk named Pasqua Rosee who opened the first coffee house in Lombard Street in the City of London. The Arabic “qahwa” became the Turkish “kahve” then the Italian “caffé” and then English “coffee”. (2) The ancient Greeks thought our eyes emitted rays, like a laser, which enabled us to see. The first person to realise that light enters the eye, rather than leaving it, was the 10th-century Muslim mathematician, astronomer and physicist Ibn al-Haitham. He invented the first pin-hole camera after noticing the way light came through a hole in window shutters. The smaller the hole, the better the picture, he worked out, and set up the first Camera Obscura (from the Arab word “qamara” for a dark or private room). He is also credited with being the first man to shift physics from a philosophical activity to an experimental one. (3) A form of chess was played in ancient India but the game was developed into the form we know it today in Persia. From there it spread westward to Europe — where it was introduced by the Moors in Spain in the 10th century — and eastward as far as Japan. The word “rook” comes from the Persian “rukh”, which means chariot. (4) A thousand years before the Wright brothers, a Muslim poet, astronomer, musician and engineer named Abbas ibn Firnas made several attempts to construct a flying machine. In 852 he jumped from the minaret of the Grand Mosque in Cordoba using a loose cloak stiffened with wooden struts. He hoped to glide like a bird. He didn’t. But the cloak slowed his fall, creating what is thought to be the first parachute, and leaving him with only minor injuries. In 875, aged 70, having perfected a machine of silk and eagles’ feathers he tried again, jumping from a mountain. He flew to a significant height and stayed aloft for ten minutes but crashed on landing — concluding, correctly, that it was because he had not given his device a tail so it would stall on landing. Baghdad international airport and a crater on the Moon are named after him. (5) Washing and bathing are religious requirements for Muslims, which is perhaps why they perfected the recipe for soap which we still use today. The ancient Egyptians had soap of a kind, as did the Romans who used it more as a pomade. But it was the Arabs who combined vegetable oils with sodium hydroxide and aromatics such as thyme oil. One of the Crusaders’ most striking characteristics, to Arab nostrils, was that they did not wash. Shampoo was introduced to England by a Muslim who opened Mahomed’s Indian Vapour Baths on Brighton seafront in 1759 and was appointed Shampooing Surgeon to Kings George IV and William IV. (6) Distillation, the means of separating liquids through differences in their boiling points, was invented around the year 800 by Islam’s foremost scientist, Jabir ibn Hayyan, who transformed alchemy into chemistry, inventing many of the basic processes and apparatus still in use today — liquefaction, crystallisation, distillation, purification, oxidisation, evaporation and filtration. As well as discovering sulphuric and nitric acid, he invented the alembic still, giving the world intense rosewater and other perfumes and alcoholic spirits (although drinking them forbidden, in Islam). Ibn Hayyan emphasised systematic experimentation and was the founder of modern chemistry. (7) The crank-shaft is a device which translates rotary into linear motion and is central to much of the machinery in the modern world, not least the internal combustion engine. One of the most important mechanical inventions in the history of humankind, it was created by an ingenious Muslim engineer called al-Jazari to raise water for irrigation. His Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (1206) shows he also invented or refined the use of valves and pistons, devised some of the first mechanical clocks driven by water and weights, and was the father of robotics. Among his 50 other inventions was the combination lock. (8) Quilting is a method of sewing or tying two layers of cloth with a layer of insulating material in between. It is not clear whether it was invented in the Muslim world or whether it was imported there from India or China. However, it certainly came to the West via the Crusaders. They saw it used by Saracen warriors, who wore straw-filled quilted canvas shirts instead of armour. As well as a form of protection, it proved an effective guard against the chafing of the Crusaders’ metal armour and was an effective form of insulation — so much so that it became a cottage industry back home in colder climates such as Britain and Holland. (9) The pointed arch so characteristic of Europe’s Gothic cathedrals was an invention borrowed from Islamic architecture. It was much stronger than the rounded arch used by the Romans and Normans, thus allowing the building of bigger, higher, more complex and grander buildings. Other borrowings from Muslim genius included ribbed vaulting, rose windows and dome-building techniques. Europe’s castles were also adapted to copy the Islamic world’s — with arrow slits, battlements, a barbican and parapets. Square towers and keeps gave way to more easily defended round ones. The architect of Henry V’s castle was a Muslim. (10) Many modern surgical instruments are of exactly the same design as those devised in the 10th century by a Muslim surgeon called al-Zahrawi. His scalpels, bone saws, forceps, fine scissors for eye surgery and many of the 200 instruments he devised are recognisable to a modern surgeon. It was he who discovered that catgut used for internal stitches dissolves away naturally (a discovery he made when his monkey ate his lute strings) and that it can be also used to make medicine capsules. In the 13th century, another Muslim medic named Ibn Nafis described the circulation of the blood, 300 years before William Harvey discovered it. Muslim doctors also invented anaesthetics of opium and alcohol mixes and developed hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes in a technique still used today. (11) The windmill was invented in 634 for a Persian caliph and was used to grind corn and draw up water for irrigation. In the vast deserts of Arabia, when the seasonal streams ran dry, the only source of power was the wind which blew steadily from one direction for months. Mills had six or 12 sails covered in fabric or palm leaves. It was 500 years before the first windmill was seen in Europe. (12) The technique of inoculation was not invented by Jenner and Pasteur but was devised in the Muslim world and brought to Europe from Turkey by the wife of the English ambassador to Istanbul in 1724. Children in Turkey were vaccinated with cowpox to fight the deadly smallpox at least 50 years before the West discovered it. (13) The fountain pen was invented for the Sultan of Egypt in 953 after he demanded a pen which would not stain his hands or clothes. It held ink in a reservoir and, as with modern pens, fed ink to the nib by a combination of gravity and capillary action. (14) The system of numbering in use all round the world is probably Indian in origin but the style of the numerals is Arabic and first appears in print in the work of the Muslim mathematicians al-Khwarizmi and al-Kindi around 825. Algebra was named after al-Khwarizmi’ s book, Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah, much of whose contents are still in use. The work of Muslim maths scholars was imported into Europe 300 years later by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci. Algorithms and much of the theory of trigonometry came from the Muslim world. And Al-Kindi’s discovery of frequency analysis rendered all the codes of the ancient world soluble and created the basis of modern cryptology. (15) Ali ibn Nafi, known by his nickname of Ziryab (Blackbird) came from Iraq to Cordoba in the 9th century and brought with him the concept of the three-course meal — soup, followed by fish or meat, then fruit and nuts. He also introduced crystal glasses (which had been invented after experiments with rock crystal by Abbas ibn Firnas). (16) Carpets were regarded as part of paradise by mediaeval Muslims, thanks to their advanced weaving techniques, new tinctures from Islamic chemistry and highly developed sense of pattern and arabesque which were the basis of Islam’s non-representationa l art. In contrast, Europe’s floors were distinctly earthly, not to say earthy, until Arabian and Persian carpets were introduced. In England, as Erasmus recorded, floors were “covered in rushes, occasionally renewed, but so imperfectly that the bottom layer is left undisturbed, sometimes for 20 years, harbouring expectoration, vomiting, the leakage of dogs and men, ale droppings, scraps of fish, and other abominations not fit to be mentioned”. Carpets, unsurprisingly, caught on quickly. (17) The modern cheque comes from the Arabic “saqq”, a written vow to pay for goods when they were delivered, to avoid money having to be transported across dangerous terrain. In the 9th century, a Muslim businessman could cash a cheque in China drawn on his bank in Baghdad. (18) By the 9th century, many Muslim scholars took it for granted that the Earth was a sphere. The proof, said astronomer Ibn Hazm, “is that the Sun is always vertical to a particular spot on Earth”. It was 500 years before that realisation dawned on Galileo. The calculations of Muslim astronomers were so accurate that in the 9th century they reckoned the Earth’s circumference to be 40, 253.4km — less than 200km out. Al-Idrisi took a globe depicting the world to the court of King Roger of Sicily in 1139. (19) Though the Chinese invented saltpetre gunpowder, and used it in their fireworks, it was the Arabs who worked out that it could be purified using potassium nitrate for military use. Muslim incendiary devices terrified the Crusaders. By the 15th century they had invented both a rocket, which they called a “self-moving and combusting egg”, and a torpedo — a self-propelled pear-shaped bomb with a spear at the front which impaled itself in enemy ships and then blew up. (20) Mediaeval Europe had kitchen and herb gardens, but it was the Arabs who developed the idea of the garden as a place of beauty and meditation. The first royal pleasure gardens in Europe were opened in 11th-century Muslim Spain. Flowers which originated in Muslim gardens include the carnation and the tulip
Needing help choosing a business name...? I am currently taking an enterprise management class. In this class we have to make a business plan like we were really starting our own business. Well, I have chose to start an interior store. My store will include furninture and accessories for living room, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms ect. and an interior decorating/designing business will also be offered through my company. Now i have to pick out a name and i cant come up with anything! I need a catchy modern and cute name that would appeal to a younger grounp of adults (20's-late 30's) thank you soo much!
Can you patch badly damaged plaster walls? I've just bought a house and whoever owned it previously was horrendous at DIY! The units are all fine and quite modern, but they've stripped some tiles off the walls and left an awful mess. There's not a smooth surface to be seen, lumps have fallen out etc.. but I'd really like a tiled splash back. They've even "painted on" some plaster in one area! I've had a suggestion of a stainless steel splash back which I really dont want (reminds me of working kitchens) and we've even considered putting plastic boarding designed for shower interiors on the wall. Can you not just patch up the surface with fresh plaster? And ideally not have to bring in a proffessional plasterer?
(10 points best answer!) Interior design help? Okay, please forgive me if this is a bit long. Just....bear with me. :) (By the way, this is not for my house. It's for a project I'm working on.) First off, the kitchen. What I had in mind was stainless steel appliances; built-in stoves (is that what they're called? You'll have to help me with names for things here), double range, double door fridge (one side fridge, one side freezer). In the middle is a island with four bar stools; two on each side. All the counter tops are black granite and the cupboards have black wood borders but are glass. For color, I was thinking a vibrant red for a nice contrast with the black wood/counter tops. Second, the dinning room. Okay...here's where I'm drawing a blank. The kitchen is a little bit closed off from the dinning room. For the table I'm thinking avant cherry wood. But as far as paint goes, I'm stuck. What color would look good in there? Third, the entrance way. Basically when you come through the front door, it's very open. The living room is to the left (they're basically attached) and the dining room is to the right. There are other rooms that are closed off with doors directly in front, but further back towards the back of the house. Should it just be the same color as the living room? If not, what color should it be? Fourth, the living room. I was previously thinking red, but the kitchen is already red. The couches are brown leather and there are two antique brown leather chairs. (Link: http://www.miniaturesandmore.com/shop/media/LeatherSteffey.jpg) There is a fireplace with an undecided color of bricks. What color should the living room be? And what decor could I put up? Rawr. That's all I have for right now. Also, there can't be any navy blues, red wine mahogany, or stupid vibrant colors (like lime green). This house is supposed to look classy and luxious, but modern and homey. Thanks a million! Any suggestions, advice, or corrections are greatly appreciated! Sorry the link for the chair doesn't work :S
Will you help me design my new house? Everything has to be contemporary/modern and brown or blue. For the living room, I need a chaise, two chairs, coffee table, and two end tables. For the dining room, I need a dining table, eight chairs, curio, buffet, and chandelier. For the kitchen, everthing has to be stainless steel and I need a two-door refrigerator, two double wall ovens (gas), rangetop (gas), island ventilation hood, and dishwasher. For the family room, I need a large sectional, coffee table, two end tables, and LCD TV. I do not have a price limit. Your work will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I may be moving. My son bought a 3 family home in my present neighborhood. I need interior design advice.? It's an old style home built in 1900. Rooms a smaller than I'm use too but the home I have now is gigantic and I can't see keeping it after the kids are gone. In this new home, my youngest son will live with his wife on the 3rd floor, the home owner, my eldest son will live on the 2nd floor and my husband and I have the 1st floor. The kitchen and bath need a complete remodel. Hard wood floors and lovely door and window trim, also also finished wood. The house overlooks a marina and river. Presently my home is decorated in a Tuscan style with the use of earth elements, leather, wood and stone. Not sure it'll have the same appeal in the new place. There is also about an acre of land, fruit trees, grapevines and sun porches that overlook them. Please give me some idea's for apartment decorating. I've never lived in an apartment. I'm not into "modern", more Tuscan or I would consider something the complement the water (river). Thanks Excuse me, I meant something that compliments the river.
