They say all of my stuff will be at my home of record 14 days after it leaves here so I'm curious as to where my items go once they leave here, how they actually go about shipping the container carrying all of my stuff (do they drive it or is it slapped on a train?), how vulnerable my belongings are to being stolen during shipment, and why it would take 14 days to complete a 26 hour trip which I will complete in 3 days in my POV (and that's taking things slowly!)

moving shipping household goods? I need to move/ship a number of boxes, plastic crate size like you buy at Costco/Sam's club, maybe 10 of them or so, heavy, mostly books from CA to TX. When I moved in the past, I either did a U-Haul myself or got movers..the standard way. Last week, I left my father's house to move to my mother's. I had to get a restraining order, so I do have proof that I had to move. Why does it take so long for the Army to ship household goods? My husband and I are PCSing from Illesheim, Germany to Fort Hood, TX and we are getting ready to ship all of our household items. We ship them out tomorrow (June 18th) and the estimated arrival date is August 23rd. That is 2 months which I think is absolutely ridiculous! My husband says its because they have to ship them on a boat but when I looked up how long it takes to cross the ocean from Europe to the US on a ship, it said 6-10 days. So why the heck does it take two months for us to get our things? What do they do that takes so friggin long? Thats a long time to live with only what we can fit in our suitcases.

If I receive a General Discharge in the Army can I still get shipment of household goods? First off please don't respond with any smart a** remarks about me or my service. I just need the facts. Thats all and thats it. I might be currently looking a Chapter 9 Discharge (ASAP Failure) and receive a General Under Honorable Conditions Discharge. I did not drink while I was in the program, but I didn't accept the 12 Step Program and the whole AA deal. It would have been easy for me to keep my mouth shut and just lied about being commited to the program, but I just couldn't. My chain of command might push for a chapter 14, but I don't see how it would apply to me. I was a self referal to ASAP, and I never got in trouble for drinking. I have been at my current duty station for 16 months now and have gotten only 3 negetive consuling statements in that time. Mind you that they were all for minor things, all 3 were for diffrent reasons and they each happened many months apart. I did get an Article 15 in May for missing my dental appointment witch was bougs and no I do not have a problem with missing appointments, it was the first I missed. The way I read the AR was a PATTERN of misconduct, not minor misconduct here and there, pick and choose. I know of soldiers in my battery with loads of art 15's and they are not getting chaptered out. My real concern here is they might try and hit me with a OTH discharge instead. Also if I do get discharged will I get my household goods shipped back to my home of record? I know how to drive a Uhaul, but I would prefur my stuff shipped if possible. Any insights? Military Spouse Question: Do I need a Power of Attorney to receive our household goods? We just PCSed 2 months ago and our household goods are ready to be delivered to us. My husband (Army) already called to schedule the delivery (for next week). Cheap shipping from the US to Japan? OK, the United States Post Office doesn't do sea mail anymore -- no surface mail to Japan. How do you get a box of household goods (say, some Corelle dishes and silverware, and maybe other stuff) from the US to Japan for a reasonable price? Do you have to live in a big city like Chicago or Houston? By reasonable price, I mean less than $100 for a big, heavy box (big being maybe like a box the supermarkets use for fruit, heavy being 40 or 50 pounds). I am not finding much information at all through search engines -- any links would be very helpful! Also, what do you do if you're shipping from a tiny town, like, say, Wahoo, Nebraska? Or Colby, Kansas? LOL! Smuggling is not cost effective -- somebody has to buy a plane ticket, and you're only allowed two big bags for free. Which works out to what, $500 to $700 a bag? Nice try though. I have relatives in the States who want to send Christmas packages with brownie mixes and American cheese -- and I'd love to get them! I'm afraid we don't have any special connections with the military or the foreign service, so sending it via embassy mail wouldn't work, either. How are we supposed to ship our few belongings to our PCS? We are leaving the 14th, and have to report to Fort Lewis, WA on the 19th. We are driving there and have a few boxes of household goods that need to be shipped. Can we do this via UPS or something? They did not even get my husband his orders until a week 1/2 before he graduated AIT!!! And they never really told him anything. After they graduated, the Drill Sgt. booted them out on their butts!! Any spouses feel penalized by ARMY housing and pcs dates being altered due to stop loss? I feel as if I had rejoined the army when he signed up since there are regulations placed on spouse movement (i.e., hubby gets deployed for 12mos-18 mos. and you're only "allowed" to leave your government housing overseas for a max of 30 days without him losing a section of his pay called BAH. Fine, I understand that. Pls. ship my household goods back to america from germany so I can complete myde gree bc there's nothing worthwhile to beaccomplished in 30 days (smaller post have limitations on course offerings, i.e, no science w/ labs 2 complete a r.n. prog); But if I leave and when he returns I can NOT be command sponsored again UNLEss he has 3yrs left on contract! So i either bend over and take the shaft in one of x ways:1) EROD (early return of dependents) and not be able to afford to stay in europe on our own w/ his salary (which btw he could be making min $160k/yr as a civ. arabic speaker and not deal w/ this) when he returns for the rest of his 18 mos. left on contract. 2)stay and don't do anything to complete my degree till the iraq fiasco is over (post doesn't have courses higher than gen ed that I need 2 complete a r.n. prog) 3)Hope he gets a duty station close to where I live (in n. ca/the houston area) even though the distance from either place would be a min. of a 5 hr. drive since we've both agreed to not add a single day to his contract. 3)perhaps you'll see why I'm so reluctant for him to sign up and he has seen the light as well. I'm due shortly., his unit COULD let him stay for 2 wks. after their deployment so he could see the kid (they've done it before for 2 others), but new ldrshp + unit change has allowed paperwork to get lost/whatever...only answer he gets is they're unsure when they could get a decision about that. In addition to that, everyone in his unit has had the proposed leave of their max 4 wks. before deploying for over a year cut to 2 wks. AND THE ARMY WONDERS WHY PPL DON'T EASILY REENLIST THESE DAYS??!?!!?

BUT.... what if i apply for perminant residence within the 2 years? can i extend the "expiry date" of my households? and how can i change my household's "status" after i became perminant residence? i guess i will be "landed" in canada from USA for the first time as a perminant residence, but by then, my household is already in Canada, so must i still put my household in the "goods to follow" form?? Does being "Honorably Discharged" get you anything? I recently got out of the Army after 9 years and moved to the SW Houston area. The reason I got out is so I could spend more time with my wife and 2 year old daughter. Year long deployments to Iraq aren't cool at all. Since I've been out, I've had nothing but bad luck. I've been looking at alot of jobs but they don't offer enough to support my family, my household goods got shipped to the wrong place, and I had to pay to get them to my apartment, and the VA Loan which is supposed to be a great thing, really isnt. I qualified for a whole $95,000 with 6.5% interest rate. The houses in this price range are in trashy neighborhoods or they are in really bad shape. I want the best for my family, and I just think the Army should have done more to help us out since I dedicated 9 years of my life to them. Does anyone have any advice, or has anyone had similar problems??????????? I was an Infantry Staff Sergeant. No I'm not disabled. And no I'm not looking for free handouts, I just think that the Army should do a little more for veterans.

What supplies do I need to shrink wrap bulky household items for shipment? I work with a charity that sends household items overseas. Every now and then we have something that would ship better if it were shrink wrapped. The latest example is baby strollers. Previously we had multiple boxes (3 or 4) that needed to be grouped together. The shipping would have been easier if the boxes had been "joined" by shrink wrap. What supplies do I need to do shrink wrapping on my own? Where can I buy shipping-quality shrink wrap? What thickness should I buy? Are there large shrink wrap "bags" available?
