moving shipping household goods? I need to move/ship a number of boxes, plastic crate size like you buy at Costco/Sam's club, maybe 10 of them or so, heavy, mostly books from CA to TX. When I moved in the past, I either did a U-Haul myself or got movers..the standard way. Since I'm not going with the boxes, I'm unsure how to do this..Do you just go to a freight shipper and give him the boxes or put them into a larger container/box or strap them to a pallet or 2 or...? If one moves in 2006 but the household goods do not move til 2007, how to deduct the household goods 2007? Want to deduct the moving expenses in 2006, but house didn't sell, so hopefully will in 2007. If the military moves our Household goods but we drive to next our PDS can we still get DLA? We are currently stationed in WA and our PCS is in NC so I know we qualify for it but what we're wondering is if we have them pack and take our belongings, while we drive, do we not qualify for the Dislocation Allowance anymore?

How do you calculate depreciation on household goods? My flatmate is moving out and we are trying to find a basis for calculating the depreciation due to wear and tear on the value of household goods, including furniture and white goods, so that I can buy her out. I'm about to ETS and am only authorized to move my household goods as far as my home of record? Here's the thing, I'm stationed at Fort Bliss, my home of record is Indiana. I will be accepting one of 2 different jobs, either in Virginia or in Florida. I'm told by transpo that I'm only authorized to ship my household goods as far as Indiana and that I will have to pay the difference in distance. My question is, should I pay the difference? Or would it be more cost effective to have them ship my stuff to Indiana, then move myself to VA or FL? Do my household goods have to be picked up from the address at which we receive BAH? (Army)? My husband is leaving Korea on the 14th of August. How do I enter these moving expenses on the tax form? I moved to a different state last year for a new job. My employer paid the moving company directly for the cost of moving my household goods. It also bought my tickets directly, and paid me a lump sum amount for miscellaneous expenses as well as a 'gross-up' for taxes. The last two items were reported as part of income in box 1 of the w2. The reimbursement paid to me covers all expenses I had, and I have no futher deductibles (Household goods move and air transport was paid directly by the employer). My reimbusement was higher than my expenses. I cann see that since all reimbusrements were included in income, the tax on that should take care of itself. However, the tax software I am using insists that if I was paid relocation expenses I have to fill out form 3903. Publication 521 dosen't seem to be clear on this point (at least not to me!)
Will the military pay for this type of move? We are PCSing from NY to CA. We want to move our household goods ourselves but my family doesnt all fit in the rental truck. I need legal advice or help in a business dispute? My husband and I recently contracted with ECUAmerican moving company to move our household goods estimated at 3400 lbs from Austin, TX to Raleigh, NC for $1495. First on the day of the pick up 7/27/07 we were asked to pay $749 of the agreed amount in cash, when on the website they say they accept all forms of payment. When we asked them the purpose they blantly stated "to pay our movers". We did not pay in cash. Secondly on 7/30/07 we were contacted again by the moving company saying that we exceeded our weight by 2300 lbs. We know this to be untrue because my husband and I just got out of the service and our last move was on 3/15/07 and the total weight was 3200 lbs. We have spoken with the owner, and he refused to even consider that they might be in error when we have an identical inventory list only 4 months prior with the catscale weight. We suggested a re-weigh and the owner insist that it will be at our expense to include labor and truck rental. I have filed a complaint w/ BBB.
Unaccompanied shipment household goods? I read in a magazine that you can do an unaccompanied shipment of limited items when you PCS so that they are there when you get to your new duty station, so you don't have to wait.. I am moving and have a lot of junk furniture and whatnot, and made an appointment for a company called 'eco-haul' to move all my stuff out. It's a lot of stuff, including furniture and household goods. I know moving guys get tips, but wondering what to do in this situation.
Do I need a License for a labor only moving service in CT? This seems to be gray area. The state requires a license those who transport household goods. My service is labor only, in that I strictly help the customer carrier his/her furniture from the house to the truck, or vice versa. The customer rents the truck from Uhaul or Budget and drives off, I never even drive the truck. I am not transporting anything because I never handle the customer's belongings off their own premesis. I do not think a license is needed. Do you have any information regarding a definitive answer on this subject?
Need help with a travel decision? My daughter and I will be moving from Washington to Iowa in March. She will be a year old then. A plane ticket will cost $300 or more and can be up to a 9 hour trip. Then when I get to the Des Moines airport, my mom would have to drive an hour 1/2 to come pick me up when my plane gets there after midnight (the only time any of the cheaper flights arrive!). I will be traveling alone with my daughter. My second option would be to take Amtrak. This would be convenient because there is a train station in my hometown that I am moving back to, and the arrival times for those trips are around 7:00 in the morning, so getting a ride would not be a problem. But for that, the train from WA to CA takes 19 hrs 44 m, then there is a 5 hour layover, then from CA to IA it is a 42 hr 5m trip. BUT the ticket, with my military discount, is only $176.40. What way should I go? It is already going to cost about $1500 for movers to move our household goods.
