We are building a new house and have some old-style timber furniture that I love and would like to get more, but at the same time I want to keep the house looking modern (it has modern kitchen, bathrooms etc). Have you noticed the new plumbing fixtures in some of the more modern hotel rooms? I recently stayed in a hotel in a large city, and was quite surprised that the bathroom had two toilet sized fixtures sitting next to one another. I immediately identified one as the toilet, but the other one perplexed me somewhat. It had a large oval rim, not unlike a toilet, but the overall configuration was different. Indeed, there was a dial on the side of the fixture, that when twisted, would produce a water flow from the center of the bowl. It took me a little while, but I eventually figured out that this plumbing fixture was a drinking fountain. Granted the water wasn't too cold and I sometimes got hair stuck in my teeth, but other than that, not a bad concept for a modern bathroom.

Has anyone ever tried to wall mount cabinetry to make a modern bathroom vanity? My husband and I are trying to do a low cost rehab of a large bathroom. I found a tv stand that is a perfect fit if we can somehow wall mount it for a floating effect and add vessel sinks and a glass countertop. The only problem is that the piece is heavy and we have metal studs for the most part. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Buying a 104 yearold house-the radiators were removed from remodeled bathrooms-asking if i want to keep them? So i am in the process of buying a 100+ year old house. The house has modern kitchen and bathrooms but the floors and many of the other rooms are original. The radiators were removed from the bathrooms and are now in the basement and the homeowner just asked me if i want to keep them or if I want them to discard of them. Ignoring the cheap & nasty, all the manufacturers of good quality toothbrush/mug holders have heavy glass tumblers in them. If you happen to drop one of these into a ceramic washbasin because your hands are wet I would have thought it quite likely that damage would ensue to one or even both items. Has anyone out there dropped one of these heavy glass tumblers into a washbasin? What happened? With todays modern plastics you'd think they could provide high quality lightweight tumblers in their products.

What natural stone should I put in my bathroom? I’m completely remodeling my bathroom and luckily have access to very discounted natural stones and tiles like granite, marble, onyx, travertine, mosaics and what not (no glass tiles tho)…. I need to decide by Monday what I want to do since I have a contractor coming in…. It is full bathroom; however, it is relatively small in size…. I already have a nice black vanity area with the outside glass bowl and an absolute black countertop. I was thinking about putting 12x12 absolute black tiles on a floor but have no idea how to do shower stall? What would like nice with black granite? I was thinking about some onyx mosaic on the shower floor and maybe honey onyx on the walls??? Also which paint would look nice??? I am looking for something modern, sharp and simple in form.... Please help….

Light Blue and Chocolate Brown bathroom scheme?? Moving into an apartment and planning the color scheme for bathroom. I got light blue with chrome accented soap dish, soap dispenser, toothbrush holder and trash can. I also purchased chocolate brown bath rug with a cool texture, choc brown toliet seat cover, and also light blue and choc brown towels. Just read on the internet that this color scheme is really modern and I like it but was wondering if you guys have any suggestions? Not sure if theres too much brown involved??

What are the best selections for remodeling/decorating a small bathroom, specifically, best colors/patterns? I am remodeling my bathroom in my roommates house. So I can't get crazy with the look. My selections should be appealing to the masses. However, I dont want it to be boring. I have always loved the black and white checkered floor look but I dont know if it will work in a small space. I like black and white because i think it can be feminine and/or masculine, contemporary and/or modern and youthful or mature/classy all at the same time. If i went that route with the floor i think i would paint the vanity black and possibly give it the distressed look. But again, i am not sure if such a bold contrast with the black against white will be good for that small of a space.

What are the steps in redesigning my basement? My basement is finished with walls and heating and ventalation and stuff so I don't need those steps, I want to repaint it get a new carpet, make it more of a living area. I want to make it sort of a study area for school work, a movie night place/place to hang with friends, and a gym area. We have a treadmill and one more sit up maching. Also, we have a small room with all the plumbing fit for a bathroom, so I am definatley making a bathroom. Basically I want this whole basement to be nice and warm and cozy, and fun and modern. Right now we have dark 1/4 inch thick grey/black carpets right on teh concrete, adn scratched smudged white walls. and ccat torn up sofas and thats pretty much it. help!!! Where do I start?

Are black fixtures a bad idea in a reall small bathroom? I have a very small bathroom. I don't know the exact size, but basically its got a towel closet, a tub, a sink, and a toilet, and barely enough room to walk in it. If you sit on the toilet your knees are an inch or two from the tub. We are about to remodel it and we really want to make it more modern. We were thinking beige light, floor and walls and tile, with Black fixtures. Is this a bad idea? What do you recommend? what if just the sink and toilet were black and the tub is white? Would that look ridiculous? HELP!

How much would it cost to convert an attached (not used for many years) storefront into a studio apartment? There is water and electrical and gas, but no heat. It is fairly cool in the summer because it is attached and has a wall to the walk-in basement of my house. The place is 100 years old. It is about 500 square feet. I have a bathroom outside the space in the basement portion. I'd want a kitchen, bed and living space and I have drawn it out. I'd like to make it modern and sleek with high-end appliances. This is Wisconsin, so I have to get it heated well.

Do we need to update our kitchen to sell our house? Our house is old, but nice. Nothing major wrong with it. It's got old-fashioned doors, weathered trim, and the bathrooms have old-fashioned tile (in nice condition). We've added new tile and stainless appliances to our kitchen. Would it be worth it to put in new cabinets (old ones are old-fashioned and the stain is fading, but otherwise in good condition), windows (we have a large window that has moisture in between the panes beause a seal is broken--it's pretty obvious) and countertops (they are not fancy or modern, but in great condition) to finish off the "updated" look, or is it not going to make a difference to sell our house? We don't want to over-do it in our 80's style house. The other houses in the neighborhood are similiar in age and not really updated.
